SINCE the poll body will not require elected officials to resign if they seek higher office, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will finish his last term as mayor to work on "lots of little stuff" for the city. Before stepping down as mayor, Osmeña wants to start dividing Barangay Guadalupe, the largest barangay, into three smaller barangays to ensure efficient delivery of services to the constituents. With the Cebu City Council, he will also confer on President Arroyo the status of Adopted Daughter

CEBU City Hall workers can look forward to a salary increase next year after Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña included it among the priorities in the 2010 budget. The mayor said about P98 million will be allocated for the salary increase of all regular and casual employees of the Cebu City government effective on Jan. 1. He also said the city will also prioritize health services in barangay health centers next year.

CEBU City barangay captains who want to run for city councilor but will not be carried in the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) lineup can expect to get more projects before the elections. Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he can make it up to them by giving additional projects, especially to those who already expected to be part of BOPK's councilorial slate. He explained that he wants to refrain from getting barangay captains to run for councilors to ensure BOPK's victory in their respective barangays.

A P25 million lump sum is being considered for allocation to Cebu City's barangays to fund their projects. But Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he would prefer that the barangay officials give him a list of their intended projects so he could determine how much they would receive. Eugenio Faelnar, Association of Barangay Council (ABC) president, earlier suggested that funding assistance be given directly to the barangays so the projects could be immediately implemented.

A PROPOSAL to give direct financial assistance to barangays in order to fast-track the implementation of projects is gaining support from Cebu City officials. Vice Mayor Michael Rama said he supports the suggestion of Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) president Eugenio Faelnar to give direct financial assistance to barangays for projects worth less than P150,000. "I have been pushing for that when I was acting mayor," Rama told Cebu Daily News. Faelnar made the suggestion to Mayor Tomas Osmeña

A bill aimed to divide barangay Guadalupe in Cebu City into two separate barangays may be signed into law by the end of this month or early next month, said Rep. Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south district). Cuenco said Senator Benigno Aquino III has assured him of concurrence with the bill, which had already been approved by the House of Representatives. Aquino said the Senate is likely to approve the bill without much hassle since the Senate usually does not concern themselves much with local legislat
